California: The State of Disrepair According to Steinbeck
There are some places I would like to see before I die. Places that are born in idyllic circumstances and set in the world as Edens of hope. These places dot mankind’s history and imagination like the ancient cities of Babylon, Alexendria, and Athens. Even the remnants of the cities would invoke the possibility of mankind’s resourcefulness and reach beyond our animal instincts. For Americans, California has always embodied the potential for America’s quest for happiness. I wonder what Steinbeck would have retorted to "Will California become America's first failed state?" It is not hard to imagine when you have the Grapes of Wrath in front of you.
