The Table: Brazil's Beach Whales, Virgin Island Turtles, and McNabb Back on Sundays

kahoneInternational

As if I need another reason to head to Brazil in the next couple of years with both the World Cup and Olympics coming, but we have one. Brazil is always in the news for the depleting Rain Forest and rarely in the news for environmental progress. Humpback Whales are making a comeback in Brazil. There is good news off the shores of one of the greatest beach lands in the world. You won’t have to fly half way around the world to see whales in Hawaii or Alaska. You can fly the other half way and spend your money in a foreign country. I love stories about whales and to think about all those kids reading Melville’s Moby Dick for the first time today.

What animal would you want to see in native habitat?

National

To continue the good news on the animal front, Endangered sea turtle gives birth to 6 hatchlings. The rare turtle normally gives birth to 100 eggs, but the small amount of offspring give reasons for hope and concern. They will be heading to St. Croix’s beaches to savor the peace and solitude and hopefully reproduce in abundance. Their mother was caught in fisherman line’s and left for dead. There are no more stoic creatures of patience and determination than turtles. Maybe we should head to St. Croix and reproduce abundantly. Good luck turtles.

What island would you want to live on?

Local

The Eagles are playing the dog pound this Sunday, so it is not a stretch for an animal connection. But the old dog, Donovan McNabb, is coming back on Sundays. The Eagles most decorated quarterback is looking for work as a broadcaster. If a NFL team does not pick him up in the next few hours, he will be back with that wide smile and goofy glee that haunted us on the McNabb show and the Campbell’s Soup commercials.  He has a congenial spirit but I like my broadcasters a little angry and bitter. McNabb should be since he never won us a Super Bowl. Well, at least Troy Aikman will finally leave us alone.

Who is the sports’ commentator/broadcaster that annoys you the most?

1. The tiger. Also, the real surprise would be if Moby Dick actually makes a return into English classrooms throughout the country. Challenging literature has been extinct a long time in America.
2. Any of the Jersey shore points work for me. South Jersey though, Ocean City to Cape May.
3. McCarver irritates the hell out of me. That will be the one good thing about the Phillies not making the playoffs- not having to listen to his obnoxious self.
