The Table: Wild Olympians, Hate Rock, and Juvenile Terrorists

garryknightInternational

The Olympics are one big party. You can forget that if you keep watching the gymnasts cry after falling off beams. You can forget the real meaning of the Olympics if you do not allow yourself some Wild Celebration. The German discus thrower Robert Harting did not forget it was a party and he did some Hulkamania after his gold medal performance. It took me back to when the WWF ruled the sports world and names like the Hulk Hogan and Super Fly and Hacksaw Jim Duggan ruled the television and the arena. They would celebrate after every match as if they had just won a gold medal.  We should celebrate one accomplishment today with just running around screaming.

Who was your favorite WWF superstar?

National

Did Hate rock cause the Sikh Temple shooting at a Wisconsin temple last weekend? This white supremacist music is under scrutiny as the public and media look for rationale to the violence.  Music is a powerful tool that connects teenage rebellion with identity, but it does not shoot anyone. There is a large gap between a work of art and someone being so motivated to act because of it. The dress, social behavior and talk are outward signs of rebellion, but the idea of subliminal or even overt messages for violence or anarchy in music is not a legitimate excuse.  We are back blaming Marilyn Mason for Columbine or the Batman Series for the Colorado series again. It was sick individuals with guns, not music.

Should Hate Rock be banned in America like Europe?

Local

You had better lock your doors and windows, there are 10 year olds going around beating up and breaking into houses. Three juveniles beat up a defenseless woman in her apartment with a jump rope, sticks and stones. Instead of going to the park or the pool, these three kids will be charged with serious crimes. Maybe summer is too long. Maybe we do not have enough summer programs. Maybe this is just a sad story of an immigrant woman being targeted by 3 kids living on the same block because she was vulnerable. This is the beginning of savagery and a life of crime – when one seeks out weakness using a pack mentality to justify their power.

What should be done to the juveniles?

1. KoKo B Ware- He could fly, just like his parrot.
2. I'll let Eminem take this one, "When a dude's gettin' bullied and shoots up his school
And they blame it on Marilyn and the heroin
Where were the parents at?
And look at where it's at middle America
Now it's a tragedy
Now it's so sad to see
An upper class city having this happening
Then attack Eminem cause I rap this way"
3. They need to have more meaningful juvenile reform schools for kids this age. Send them away for 3-6 months, and when they return, they should be on probation of some kind, provided counseling of some kind for at least a year or two. As you said, doing nothing will only guarantee that these kids will become even more ruthless criminals as they get older.
