The Table For July 24, 2012

Even though the hunt for Amelia Earhart’s lost plane has been ceased, the fascination with the first aviator to fly across the Atlantic will never end.  Serving as the Google Doodle today, Amelia Earhart’s legacy and influence in aviation and for women is unparalleled.  Her impact still inspires younger generations today and her shocking disappearance in 1937 still fascinates even more.

Who are other inspiring figures from the past that still fascinate us today?

National

One person who more than likely was inspired by Amelia Earhart was Sally Ride, the first U.S. woman in space.  Sadly, Sally Ride passed away yesterday after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.  Again, an inspiration to countless future scientists, the often reserved Sally Ride shattered the gender barrier and atmosphere when she launched into space in 1983.

Who is another woman that defied societal norms?

Local

No disrespect to the women above, but speaking of flying high, the Philadelphia Phillies have managed two big come from behind wins in two games straight.  After defeating San Francisco on Sunday in a 12 inning battle and coming back from a three run deficit in the bottom of the 9th against Milwaukee last night, the Fightin’ Phils are trying to do the improbable and make a legitimate run at the playoffs.

Do the Phils’ last two wins inspire some hope, or is it too late for them to make a run?

Make it 3 comebacks in a row! But no, it is almost impossible for them to make a run this late in the season with this bullpen. Prove me wrong, Phils.

Amelia Earhart's contribution to America is really cool, plus her bravado and unique vision gives us all motivation to match her passion. Sally Ride was the first women in space and that was a great connection I missed. There is something about going places no one has done before. I admire Emily Dickinson for her non-comformity and devotion to her art. As for the Phillies, with Cole now, we are going to roll on the East. In 2007, weren't we 7+ games out in September? Thanks for the lunch.
