Just Saying

Some rights reserved by Joel BedfordWhen we get knocked down, it's all about getting back up again.  I totally agree with this, but here's the thing -- it's the manner in which we get back up.  We all have choices in this.  Number One: stay down there and become accustomed to the ground we're on (NOT)!  Number Two: get back up and stay in the same fight (ADMIRABLE BUT ALSO STUBBORN -- AGAIN, NOT)!  Number Three: find higher ground and stop fighting (THAT'S IT.  THAT FEELS RIGHT ----- BREATHE).

In the neighborhood I grew up in, you learn that if you want the pain to stop, even for a little while, you go with #1. Only the crazy kids would go with #2 and though admirable, there was very little praise. You got beaten and worst. The idea of a fighter is to break the other's spirit and never avoid the conflict. If you weren't a fighter, then you didn't fight. You could get some props for that. But if you wanted to fight and prove your self-worth in that, then you had to be ready for the consequences: more fights and always being a target.

I guess I see #1 and #3 as part of the same thing. The difference is the wisdom of why we stay down or rise above as you say.

As a poet and writer, I admire #2 for the conflict and the power of the work is whether #2 will reach #3 after #1. It is the universal process.

Thanks for the lunch.

You're right, JD. Numbers 1 and 2 are about proving. Number 3 is about demonstrating, but it can't be recognized and appreciated without 1 and 2. We can't be good without having been bad - first.
