Preparing for Pre Employment Physical Test

Some rights reserved by DIAC ImagesA pre-employment medical examination can get anyone nervous, as there is always the fear of not being able to pass this examination, and thereby losing a new job even before one has had the opportunity to begin. Although you really can’t manipulate the outcome of the test in your favour, you can make sure that you are prepared for it by familiarizing yourself with the process.

Generally, every individual pre-employment test is different from the other, depending upon the job it is being conducted for. They might consist of regular medical check up of the individual or complex psychological and fitness testing, depending upon the physical involvement of the job being applied for. Nevertheless, every test would require the completion of a written questionnaire as one of its parts.

The Written Questionnaire

The main aim of the written questionnaire is to gather as much data as possible about an individual applying for the job. This would entail asking broad and generalized questions that would cover commonly occurring potential medical issues regarding the individual’s physicality and psychology. You also need to be prepared to answer all questions regarding your health, lifestyle, and medical history. Some of the common questions that are asked are as follows:

  • If you take any sort of prescribed medication with regularity
  • If you have ever undertaken surgery
  • Whether your family has had a history of diseases like diabetes or asthma
  • If you had a prior or present addiction to alcohol and/or drugs
  • Whether you smoke

It is important that you give honest and comprehensive answers to all the questions asked. You might get into trouble later for failure to provide full information, especially if some hidden condition manifests itself later.

Physical Exam

The physical part of the pre employment exams differ from job to job, depending upon the required ability to fulfill the regular duties of your new job as well as on the statutory safety and health standards of the employment. While the exam itself would vary vastly, dependent on the job itself, some standard pre employment physical tests would include the following:

Hearing Test - It involves the dropping of an object by the examiner and recording your reaction to the resultant sound. Your reaction would confirm the normalcy of your hearing functions. It could also involve more complex methods that would require you to listening through a pair of headphones and pressing buttons whenever you hear a control sound.

Blood Pressure Test - This is a very common physical test that almost everyone has gone through in their lifetimes at least once.

BMI (Body Mass Index) - Your weight will be measured in proportion to your height. For this test, you might have to remove any heavy clothing and shoes that you may be wearing at the time, and step on the medical scales.
