    How to Make Your Water Healthier

    Some rights reserved by Keoni CabralWe all know drinking water is good for your health, but what's the best water out there? On this issue, I am firmly on the side of drinking filtered tap water over the more more expensive option of buying bottled water. However, I know some people will only tolerate the taste of pure aquifer water like Fiji. No matter which source you choose, here's a few tips to make sure you are getting the maximum benefits from your daily hydration.

    1. Drink Your Water Ice Cold

    Research shows that drinking beverages cold can help you burn calories which is key for weight control. Think about it. Your body is always trying to keep itself in balance, and part of that includes temperature regulation. Ingesting cold water forces your body to make sure its temperature doesn't go below the normal 98.6 degrees, so you are burning extra calories to counteract the intake of cold. Personally, I fill my water bottle up with as much as ice as possible.

    2. Make Sure Your Water Container is BPA-Free

    Scientists have recently identified the chemical bisphenol-A or BPA as contributing to problems with sexual development in animals. BPA is an industrial chemical that is used in the linings of canned foods and water bottles. The biggest concern with BPA linings is that it has been shown to seep into the food which is then digested, and your body treats this influx of BPA as the hormone estrogen. In a recent study, the Journal of the American Medical Association showed that frequent eaters of canned soup saw skyrocketing levels of BPA in their system. Since proper estrogen amounts are essential in male and female hormone systems, both men and women should watch how much of it they are ingesting. If you are drinking water in any kind of bottle, be sure that the label says BPA-Free.

    3. Add Liquid Vitamins to Your Drinking Water

    According to some studies, daily multivitamins have varying rates of absorption with some as low as ten percent. Furthermore, some multivitamins claim to be delivered through time release capsules. I am not a trained nutritionist, but I think basic common sense suggests that liquid vitamins are better absorbed than pills or capsules. First, your digestive system can break down liquids much easier than it can solids. Secondly, as mentioned previously, your body is programmed to seek balance. A megadose of vitamins will probably cause your system to flush out excess nutrients. Instead of paying extra for time release capsules, consider buying a liquid vitamin, adding it to your Nalgene bottle and sipping on it throughout the day. This delivery method will promote maximum vitamin absorption and keep your nutrient intake balanced. Remember too that some vitamins are fat soluble, so make sure you drink your vitamin water with a meal as much as possible.

    No matter how you get your water, remember it's the chemical upon which all life depends!

    Is this BPA the reason why I am so feminine? Wait don't answer that but I do love New England Chunky Clam Chowder. This is an interesting take. I have been drinking water for a long time and I have never thought of adding anything to make it healthier. I do it for taste. I prefer it and I get nasty looks from servers all along the east coast.

    Does lemon add anything to your water? What about fruit flavored water? I've never understood that but my kids and parents love it. I drink water from the faucet and though I do long for a soft drink once or twice a week, I find it makes me feel better. I know this because on the days I do not have enough, I feel lethargic and depressed. Funny how water works.

    I will drink my water with lunch proudly, even though everyone thinks I am just plain cheap. Good post.

    Great post! I am impressed with the article and thanks very much for sharing good information. You must forget soft drinks, soda and alcohol. It taste really good but the only need of your body is water. Just drink plain water as much as possible and if you are tired of drinking water you can always go for green teas that contain antioxidants.
    Great and well written post. Drinking enough water really is one of the easiest and cheapest way to stay healthy. And when you add some lemon, lime or cucumber to it, you make it even more healthy. In addition – the taste is better, at least for many people.
